Let's bowl, let's bowl, let's rock n' roll

It was my birthday don't you know!
Champagne in Dubai, a birthday brunch on the weekend with friends and then...
BOWLING, 50s style!

...at 6pm...so we could be in bed at a reasonable hour...I know, I am so rock n' roll!

Yeah it was fun to wear a frock and bowl, but really is all about the shoes!

PS - Bro, this is the dress I was talking about, I got it for my 21st birthday celebration!

(When telling my brother on the phone about what I was wearing, he reminded me that remembering my dress from 9 years ago was a bit of a test. Good point!)

Thank you for all the birthday wishes!

My birthday weekend

Armed with birthday breakfast goodies from Artecaffe, my friend Jeni and I heading to Nairobi National Park to hunt down some lions and their cubs.

The 5am get up meant that there were not that many other cars in the park (not surprising for a Saturday morning..!-but it also meant that by lunchtime I was ready for nap!).

Once the early morning mist had lifted the animals came out of their hiding.

We searched high and low for the lions, but they were not at number 5 or 7 where they should have been!hmm. Eventually we found a lone lioness on the prowl-  we thought she was going to go in for a kill at one point; the zebra nervously huddled together and the four ostrich trotted off to protect their eggs...but the lioness didn't seem that bothered and after sniffing around for a while continued on her journey.

It was a great start to the day-but I am still quietly hoping that next year I will be able to run the NYC marathon!

PS-  I know I have hundreds of photos of zebra-but that doesn't stop me taking hundreds more!

Looking ahead

Back to school blues-am reflecting on a great road trip and thinking about what I want to do and achieve in the next few months.

I am looking forward to things- I am already thinking about my birthday- it is on the 5th November. What I want to be doing, more than who I want to spend it with (as money, time and distance doesn't make that one easy). Looking forward to Ethiopia for Christmas (I have just purchased my flight-yippee!) and thinking about what I will be doing for Hogmanay (even though I am not the biggest fan of NYE)

But before all that...this weekend I have my first visitors from Uganda; Tim and Stacy are over for the Nairobi marathon...the whole thing (they are amazing-I bet Tim will film his runs, he is good at that!

It will be great to see them again-and to cheer them on (with my stitched-up leg this is all I can manage!)

Images from the weekend

I was up at 6.30 am to make the pasta salad and pack the ice-box. Then an early run before the fun of a mini road-trip to celebrate Stacy's birthday. Heaven!

Not a bad view! We arrived just in time for beer o'clock and lunch before the very serious (!) scrabble play
-off!

Other highlights; reading every word in the imported Telegraph newspaper, sundowners by the Nile, dancing under the stars, playing with Kelly's very cute puppies, nutella and pancakes for breakfast, quiet time in the sun and singing in the car.

On the down side, I was so sore from yoga that I hardly moved and walked around like an old woman! So no fishing, like my last visit , but lots of fun with friends. Light and love.

3 beautiful things

3 things that have given me pleasure this weekend are walnuts, margaritas and naps.
  1. My birthday gift to myself was a beautiful walnut coloured Orla Kiely handbag, The smell, the soft leather, the detachable satchel strap; it is special and I love it.
  2. Last night I went to a rave under the stars. The best margarita maker in Kampala was at the bar salting our glasses and topping us up. His wife is my yoga teacher, she is away breathing somewhere, so he was putting his skills to use. The dance floor then filled up with everyone making squares with their hands - all that was missing were the glow sticks!
  3. Afternoon naps are the best thing about weekends! They rejuvenated me on Saturday so that I could restart the birthday weekend celebrations.
